Anne Côté begins her first season as a full-time assistant coach at the University of Memphis. However, she is familiar with the program, having served as a volunteer assistant in 2006 and watching her daughter and former pupil, Laura, set for the Tigers since 2005.
Not your ordinary assistant, Côté brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge as well as nearly 30 years of coaching and player evaluation experience to Carrie Yerty's staff. Côté was instrumental in calling the shots at the service line for the Tigers in 2006, resulting in 284 aces--eighth all-time on the Tigers' single season aces list. She was also involved in scouting and game-plan implementation. With the departure of former assistant Travis Filar, Côté will assume defensive strategy responsibilities, as well as training the Tiger liberos and defensive specialists.
Côté came to Memphis as a volunteer in 2006, after spending the last five years as the head volleyball coach at Aden Bowman Collegiate Institute. While there, she led ABCI to four-consecutive City championships and three-straight Saskatchewan 5A Gold Medal crowns.
A decorated instructor, Côté earned her first recognition in 1984 when she was tabbed Saskatchewan Volleyball Association (SVA) Female Coach of the Year. She again garnered the honor in 1985 and has since earned SVA High Performance Coach of the Year (1994, 2005) and SVA Development Coach of the Year (2000-01, 2003) accolades. She was most recently honored as Volleyball Canada's 2005 Female Coach of the Year in June, 2006. Côté was also awarded the LIFE Membership Award with the SVA in 2006.
Côté became active in the Canadian club and provincial volleyball scene following her collegiate playing career. She got her career started in 1978 as the head club coach of the U18 Kindersley/Saskatoon A&A Juveniles. As the head coach, her teams won six-straight provincial crowns and marched to a National Silver medal finish in 1984, a Silver medal in 1987 and a Bronze medal in 1994. She led the U18 Saskatoon Black Widows to a fifth-place showing in the 1997 Canadian National tournament and guided the U18 JCVC Red Juveniles to four top-15 national finishes from 2002-06.
As a provincial head coach, Côté claimed a pair of championship with the U18 Can-Am Juveniles (1984) and the U17 Zone 6 Winter Games team (1986). Her U20 provincial teams competed in the Canada Games three times, placing fifth twice-in 1987 and 2005.
In her coaching career, Côté has guided 17 teams to provincial titles or Canadian National medal finishes. In addition, she has sent over 30 players on to National team programs and/or European professional competition. Several others have gone on to play at Canadian or American universities.
As a player, Côté was a three-year setter at the University of Saskatchewan, where she led the Huskiettes to a CIAU Silver medal finish en route to being tabbed a second-team all-star setter. Following her collegiate playing days, Côté won a gold and silver medal playing for Saskatchewan and Alberta, respectively. The Alberta native has since played 15 years in the Senior Women's ranks, playing for Kindersly A & A and Saskatoon Soar. Most recently, she competed in the World Masters Games in the sport of volleyball in 2005.
Côté has also been instrumental in other aspects of teaching the game of volleyball, serving as an instructor in the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation.
In addition, Côté has been an official since 1973 and a Canadian National official for 22 years. She has served as the treasurer on the executive of the Saskatoon Volleyball Officials Organization since 1984.
A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Côté earned bachelor's degrees in Physical Education in 1983 and Education in 1984.
Anne and Keith Côté have two daughters, Tara (21) who is a defensive specialist and setter at Louisiana-Lafayette and Laura (19), and a son Andrew (16).
