Memphis, Tenn. - Arkansas State blew through the University of Memphis Varsity Pro Shop Tennis Invitational this weekend, collecting six overall titles. Gija Geme of Arkansas State, won the No. 1 singles title over Guadalupe Hernandez of Tennessee Tech, 6-3, 6-4. By the end of the tournament, Arkansas State had added two more singles and three more doubles titles. The Lady Tigers, had a positive weekend finishing with three consolation titles and also adding four finishes as runner-ups in other finals.
Sophomore Annika Westberg, won the No. 6 singles title, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, over teammate Kate Borthwick (graduate student) in a battle for individual bragging rights.
In No. 7 singles, sophomore Laura Hughes took home the trophy with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0, win against Ashley Cagle of Stephen F. Austin.
Junior Betsy Card and Freshman Angie Wilkinson, grabbed the No. 2 doubles title with an 8-2 win over Joni Jordan/Julie Thomas from the University of Missouri.
Even though it wasn't a win, Angie Wilkinson fought hard before eventually falling in the No. 4 singles consolation final, 6-1, 7-5, to Laura Miller of Southwest Missouri State.
The Lady Tigers, had three doubles teams finish as runner-ups. All three teams eventually went down in the finals. It was the team of Ladyman/Lindemann, finishing second in the No. 1 doubles, Westberg/O'Donoghue, in the No. 3 doubles, and Borthwick/Hughes, taking second prize as well, in the No. 4 doubles.
