Springfield, Mo.-- - The University of Memphis Lady Tigers had a mixed day at the Southwest Missouri State (SMS) Hardee's Women's Tennis Invitational, Saturday.

Graduate student Kate Borthwick and freshman Sumitra Rao each won their C singles second round matches before falling in the quarterfinals to SMS opponents. Borthwick defeated Montana State's Susan Risteen, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round before falling 7-5, 6-2, to Amy Newman of SMS. Rao defeated Oral Roberts' Lindsay Patterson, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to SMS's Asa Duneborn, 6-2, 6-3.

In other singles play, the Lady Tigers lost both of their A Singles and one of their C Singles matches.

Junior Christina Ladyman fell 7-6, 6-0 to Southwest Missouri's Ia Zorashvilli, while freshman Sabrina Lindemann lost to Mary Jacutin of Oklahoma City University (OKU), 6-3, 7-5. Junior Claire O'Donoghue was defeated in her C Singles match by Montana State's Stacey Voelker, 6-2, 6-3.

On the championship side of the C Singles bracket, junior Betsy Card fell to Oklahoma City University's Cecilia Akesson, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Junior Laura Hughes, who lost her C Singles opening match, advanced to the B Singles Consolation Quarterfinals, defeating Oral Roberts' Katie Hoffa, 6-0, 6-1 to stay alive in the competition.

On the doubles side, the Lady Tigers advanced two teams to the semifinals.

The team of Ladyman/Lindemann defeated their quarterfinal opponents from Arkansas-Little Rock, 8-5, to advance to the semifinals, where they fell to the duo of Anne Leguennec/Melissa Lemus from Oklahoma City University, 8-4.

The team of Hughes/Rao won their C Doubles First Round match, 8-4, over the team of Brecht/Janik from Oklahoma Christian, before falling 9-8 to Jensen/Risteen from Montana State.

The final matches of the tournament begin Sunday at 9 a.m., when the consolation and championship singles and doubles finals will begin.

The Lady Tigers return to match play Feb. 11 against Louisiana-Monroe at 2:30 p.m.
