Oxford, Miss.-- - The University of Memphis (2-4) fell to No. 6 Ole Miss (1-0), 6-1, Tuesday.
Sophomore Richard Magney defeated his opponent at No. 1 singles, freshman James Shortall, 7-6, 6-4. Shortall was ranked No. 18 in the country in the pre-season poll, although he was not ranked for Tuesday's match.
Junior Alistair Todd almost pulled the upset of No. 43 Alexander Hartman. Hartman won the first set 6-2, before Todd won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Hartman closed out the victory with a 6-1 win in the third.
The Tigers host two matches over the weekend, facing C-USA foe Southern Miss, Friday, at 3 p.m. at the University Club. A Saturday match against Indiana State is slated for 2 p.m. at the Wimbleton Sports Plex.
