After losing two straight on the road, the Tigers will be looking to end a three-game swing on
a winning note tonight at Arkansas State ... Thursday's game is the first of four for the Tigers in the
next eight days ... Memphis ventures to Jonesboro, Ark., for the first time since posting a 60-59
win over the Indians Dec. 5, 1987 ... the U of M has turned the ball over 20+ times in each of the
past two games.
DIFFERENT BORDER, ANOTHER BATTLE
First Ole Miss on Saturday, now Arkansas State tonight. Throw in an upcoming
game against Tennessee and it's easy to see the University of Memphis basketball team
is in the midst of a backyard-battle kind of week.
Following a 74-64 loss at Mississippi on Saturday, things don't get any easier for the
Tigers tonight when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for the first time in 12 years to take
on an Arkansas State team which advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year and has
one of the nation's top point guards in Chico Fletcher.
The 1-4 Indians are coming off a 79-68 road win at Jackson State which avenged
an overtime loss in the Convocation Center a week earlier. The Dec. 6 game was
Arkansas State's last before breaking for fall semester exams. Along with a 12.4 scoring
average, Fletcher is averaging 9.0 assists per game. Senior forward C.J. Pepper is
averaging 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds to lead the Indians.
Memphis will actually be looking to stop a two-game losing streak which began with
a 62-61 loss at Kansas State on Dec. 8. Prior to venturing to the nation's heartland, the
Tigers were riding a four-game winning streak capped by an 82-72 win over then, 25th-ranked
Miami.
TIGER MOMENT -- December 16th
Chris Garner blocks a jumper by Tennessee's
Damon Johnson with 5.3 seconds to play, preserving
Memphis' 57-55 win over the Vols on Dec. 16, 1995.
The victory in 1995 was Memphis' last against
Tennessee. On Saturday the Tigers will be looking to
snap a three-game losing streak against the in-state
rival.

A LITTLE ABOUT JOHNNY JONES
The University of Memphis named Johnny Jones the Tigers' interim head coach
on Nov. 14. Jones, one of the most visible collegiate recruiters in the nation, is entering
his third season with the U of M program. Jones had served as the associate head
coach at Memphis for the last two years and headed up the Tigers' national recruiting
program.
Jones came to Memphis by way of Louisiana State where he worked under Dale
Brown for 12 years. Prior to his coaching days, Jones, 38, was a player for the LSU
Tigers in the early '80s and was a member of the 1980-81 team that won the SEC,
advanced to the Final Four and won a school-record 31 games. Jones is the only
person in the history of LSU basketball to both coach and play in a Final Four.
Jones and his wife Kelli have a son, John Vincent, who was born last June and are
expecting a second child the first of the year.
ARKANSAS STATE-MEMPHIS SERIES NOTES
- Arkansas State holds a 27-26 lead in its series with Memphis but the Tigers have
won 13 of the past 16 games, including an 83-66 victory last year in Memphis.
- Memphis shot 50.8 percent
from the floor (33-65) en route to last
year's 83-66 win in The Pyramid.
Jimmie Hunter came off the bench to
score 18 points, had five rebounds,
three assists, three blocks and four
steals.
- Last year's win over Arkansas
State marked the Tigers' 100th victory
in The Pyramid.
- Arkansas State is 16-7 against
Memphis in games played in
Jonesboro. However Memphis has
won the last four games in the Arkan-sas
city and has not lost on the road to
the Indians since the early 1950s.
- Arkansas State had posted
back-to-back wins in Memphis prior
to last year's loss. The Indians closed
down the Tigers' run in the Mid-South
Coliseum with a 58-57 win over the U
of M in the second round of the National
Invitation Tournament on March
18, 1991. It was the last game the
Tigers played in the facility before
moving downtown.
THIRD OF THREE
Tonight's game marks the third straight game the Tigers have played on the road
since an 82-72 win over then, 25th-ranked Miami on Dec. 4.
And to make the Tigers' mid-December stretch even more difficult, bookending
the road swing are a pair of home games against nationally-ranked opponents. After
tonight's game, the U of M must turn its attention to a Saturday game in The Pyramid
against 13th-ranked Tennessee.
This year marks the first time the U of M has played three straight on the road since
February of 1997 when the Tigers rebounded from a 72-67 overtime loss at Houston
to win at 23rd-ranked Tulane 62-56 and at Saint Louis 59-58.

THE LAST OF THE YEAR
Memphis will play its last nonconference road game of the regular season when
the Tigers travel to Jonesboro.
Memphis has not won a road game against a nonconference opponent since
defeating Oklahoma 80-78 on Dec. 13, 1997. The Tigers have lost eight straight
games in opposing teams' arenas.
Following tonight's game, Memphis plays its next five games at home. The Tigers
do not hit the road again until a Jan. 8 game at Saint Louis.
POUNDING IT INSIDE
The University of Memphis' inside game continues to struggle to find an identity.
In its last three games, just 30 percent of the Tigers' field goal attempts have come from
its five post players.
Against Ole Miss on Saturday, just 16 of the Tigers' 55 field goal attempts (29.1
percent) were taken by forwards Earl Barron, James Harris, Shamel Jones, Paris
London and Kelly Wise.
During the first two stops of the current three-game road swing Wise, who is
averaging 12.4 points per game and 9.0 rebounds, attempted just 11 shots (5-of-11).
Wise was 2-of-6 against Kansas State but never got to the free throw line. Against Ole
Miss he was 3-of-5 but struggled at the line, making 3-of-8 from the stripe.
FREE THROW STRUGGLES
Memphis is shooting 63.8 percent from the free throw line this season but the
percentage would be much lower if not for the shooting of point guards Keiron Shine
and Courtney Trask. Shine leads the squad with a 84.6 free throw percentage (22-
of-26) while Trask has made 78.6 percent of his shots (11-of-14). Without the tandem,
Memphis' free throw shooting percentage dips to 59.7 percent.
One statistic which is not included in the total numbers is the Tigers' shooting while
in the bonus. The U of M has missed the front end on 10-of-20 bonus situations this
year, including all three of its one-and-one opportunities against Ole Miss.
PROVIDING A SPARK
Memphis senior forward James Harris started the second half against Ole Miss
and responded with typical Harris numbers. He was whistled for three personal fouls
in the first 1:19 of the period but "The Sheriff" sparked a 17-3 Tiger run to begin the half
by scoring the Tigers' first two baskets after the break.
Harris equaled a career scoring high with six points and had two rebounds before
fouling out following seven minutes on the floor. He also sustained a cut to his left
temple which required four stitches following the game.
STANDING THEIR GROUND
Last year Memphis' defense drew just 17 charges. After eight games this season,
Memphis has equaled the mark from a year ago.
Both Keiron Shine and Earl Barron, the U of M's leaders in the miscellaneous
stat, forced player control fouls in the loss at Ole Miss.
Shine leads the Tigers, drawing opposing players into seven player control fouls
while Barron has been on the defensive end of four charges.
ON THE HALF HOUR SATURDAY
Just a reminder ... tip-off time for the Tigers' Saturday game against Tennessee
is at 7:30 p.m. U of M graduation ceremonies will be held earlier in the day in The
Pyramid and the arena will have to be reconfigured for the game.

TOYS FOR LI’L TIGERS
This year marks the third season the University of Memphis basketball program
has been involved with "Toys for Li'l Tigers". Tiger basketball fans are asked to bring
an new, unwrapped toy to the U of M's games against Tennessee (Dec. 18) and
ULMonroe (Dec. 21).
Last year the U of M basketball team was able to brighten the holidays for over 350
inner-city children on Christmas Eve. In addition the Tigers also distributed toys at
LeBonheur Children's Hospital and plan on making a return visit this holiday season.
Tiger fans can also be dropped off at the basketball office at the corner of Normal
and Southern through Dec. 21.
TIGERS SIGN MEMPHIS TANDEM
University of Memphis interim head coach Johnny Jones announced the Tigers
have signed two players from Raleigh-Egypt High School in Memphis to National
Letters of Intent.
The U of M signed Scooter McFadgon (6-3, 170) on the first day of the early
signing period. McFadgon's second cousin and high school teammate, Lou Wright (6-
6, 180), signed on the final day of the early period.
Wright is the younger brother of Atlanta Hawk Lorenzen Wright who also played
at the U of M. He played the last three years for California power Westchester High in
Los Angeles before moving back to Memphis this summer. McFadgon is considered
the best prep player in the state of Tennessee.
"It is exciting there are two players of that caliber at the same high school," said
Memphis coach Johnny Jones. "We are very fortunate they are playing for very good
basketball coach who will prepare them to play at this level."
Both players are ranked by most recruiting analysts as Top 100 prep prospects.
BIG BROTHERS
The University of Memphis Tigers are joining forces this season with Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Greater Memphis for a new venture in community outreach. During the
1999-2000 academic year each member of the team will serve as a mentor for an area
child.
The Tigers met their new little brothers the week before the team's first exhibition
game. Most of the little brothers were in attendance at both exhibitions.
"The exposure the littles in Big Brothers Big Sisters have is so narrow," said Big
Brothers Big Sisters executive director Adrienne Bailey. "Usually they come from
single, female parent households. They have to take two or three jobs just to make
ends meet and don't have the time to take children places the children of two-parent
homes take for granted. This is a wonderful opportunity."
The Big Brothers project is one of several community relations activities the Tigers
are involved in. One of the biggest city and county-wide projects is Tracking the Tigers.
The program involves over 250 classroom teachers from grades K-12 which is a fun
way children develop skills in math, geography, writing and reading by following the
basketball team throughout the season.
